چکیده

In orthognatic surgery, patient mandible and maxilla are repositioned to correct face dismorphosis due to congenital malformation or traumatism. An important issue is to evaluate the consequences of these bone repositioning on the face soft tissue, in order to predict the post-operative aesthetic aspect of the patient. This problem is addressed using a biomechanical model of the patient skin tissue. A generic 3D Finite Element model of the face is presented, integrating skin layers and muscles with specific mechanical properties. This generic model is then automatically deformed to fit the patient morphology, using an elastic registration algorithm. The elements irregularities arising from the registration are automatically corrected. Therefore, a Finite Element model of each patient is available to simulate the face soft tissue deformation resulting from bone repositioning.

Patient specific finite element model of the face soft tissues for computer-assisted maxillofacial surgery

This paper addresses the prediction of face soft tissue deformations resulting from bone repositioning in maxillofacial surgery. A generic 3D Finite Element model of the face soft tissues was developed. Face muscles are defined in the mesh as embedded structures, with different mechanical properties (transverse isotropy, stiffness depending on muscle contraction). Simulations of face deformatio...

Orbital and maxillofacial computer aided surgery: patient-specific finite element models to predict surgical outcomes.

This paper addresses an important issue raised for the clinical relevance of Computer-Assisted Surgical applications, namely the methodology used to automatically build patient-specific finite element (FE) models of anatomical structures. From this perspective, a method is proposed, based on a technique called the mesh-matching method, followed by a process that corrects mesh irregularities. Th...

Evaluating soft tissue simulation in maxillofacial surgery using preoperative and postoperative CT scans

One of the most important issue in soft tissue modeling is to assess the quality of the simulations. A validation protocol is presented based on two CT scans of the patient acquired before and after craniomaxillofacial surgery. The actual bone repositioning realized during the intervention are accurately measured and reproduced. An evaluation of the soft tissue deformation is then computed usin...
